So I did have to purchase and have a graphics card installed (the one I got was specifically designed for my model of Dell for 3D programs) - resulting in an extra headache and expense I hadn't planned on. jpgs (for clients) wasn't what it needed to be - had never realized this when buying the computer. Wanted to mention that I ran into a problem this time as it turned out my Dell desktop didn't have a dedicated graphics card, so the output of. The how-to tutorial's are definitely worth viewing as things are not necessarily intuitive, especially if you've never used a program of this sort before. As an aside, I'd spent so much time in my virtual home that when the walls finally went up and the sheetrock was already felt eerily familiar (!). And as a result of the hours I spent designing and planning my own residence (including placing all key furnishings), we had zero change orders during my home's construction. As an interior designer, this is a key tool of mine used on my client's behalf as, after all, so many folks have trouble visualizing, so it's ideal for this application of test-driving various space planning and/or design concepts on paper.īut as a pre-build tool, it can't be beat. Overall, and particularly given the price, I would recommend it as a great way to get started and get a feel for layouts and designs.ĭelighted with this latest version of Home Designer, it's the third time I've purchased this product beginning with the one I used to create my own custom home (3D renderings completed in 2005). This is particularly noticeable with fixtures and fittings (which are very American in style and language - get used to faucets!) and rooms in the roof which are handled very oddly. It is also orientated to the US market and so some aspects of how properties are constructed in the UK and our styles are not readily available and have to be derived from something as near as possible. I've used several different packages in the past and this one is no better or worse than any of the others in how you zoom in or out, or move around your design - they all seem fairly unintuitive to me! Patience is also required for the 3D views which have excellent clarity but can be very confusing to get right unless you have previous experience of these types of packages. To be fair, you get what you pay for and can often 'fudge' the way the package works to get the desired effect but this does take time, practice and patience. If, however, you are hoping to design something a little more complicated or out of the ordinary (your own little 'Grand Designs') then the limitations of the package quickly become apparent, frustrating and very time consuming. Adding a reasonably simple roof is again easy and so if you intention is to develop a set of plans and elevations for a fairly typical, 'developers' style house or a standard extension then this will be money well spent. Moving walls and windows, or adding another floor is easy and the package is very user-friendly to this stage. Getting started is straightforward and you can have the floor layout completed very quickly. It does however have a few downsides that can get a little frustrating (and hence the 3 stars). Overall a pretty good product, especially given the price.
